The smith was out sick, so they were forced to stay the night at the Wild Hare, where Edwardâs father stubbornly chose to ignore him, retiring to his rented room above the tavern. Edward walked to the end of town and back to kill some time, drank two pints of sour ale, took an early supper of chewy meat-pie and stale bread with the pubs only other patron, Hornsby, and retired to bed.
The next morning, while he and his father were taking breakfast, Hornsby returned to the tavern and relayed that the wheel was still not ready.
Richard peered over his newspaper, spectacles tipped low on his nose. âThe barmaid said a farmer at the end of town had a mare for sale,â he stated before flipping the paper back into place. âI will wait here with Hornsby if you want to get on the road.â
Edward paid their remaining tab and set off down the muddy one-lane road. Truth be told, he was in a hurry to get back. For reasons other than boredom.
He was anxious to check on Morgan, and to let her know of her stepfatherâs acceptance. Edward could only hope that she would not break into tears when she heard the news. But honestly, it was a coin toss. Half his brain reassured him that he was doing the right thing. The other half gnawed at him that part of this rash decision was exactly what his father had shouted at him for being. Selfishâ¦
Edward admonished his self-doubt and kicked a clot of dirt in the middle of the road. He needed to focus on the path ahead. In less than an hour, provided the horse he was about to purchase did not go lame, he would be riding up to his townhouse in the city. He would then wash up quickly and head straight to Lady Vandicampâs residence.
Miss Sinclair⦠âMorgan,â he said, testing the sound of her name on his tongue. Intrigued by the ebullience the word induced, he tried it again. âMorganâ¦â
He wanted to sound the name out on her bare flesh, feel the gooseflesh rise against his lips when he did. Edward closed his eyes. Damn it to hell, he was in over his head. This was exactly why he had stayed away this past week, coming up with a litany of excuses as to why he must cancel dance lessons. To save her, from himself!
Because, truth be told, saddled somewhere between excitement and fear, echoed a humming and constant desire to make her his. Abstinence had been his only friend. And then he had gone and lost that at Lady Printmoseâs ball. All thinly veiled control collapsing like a glass house being hit by a boulder.
How he had wanted to smash in the face of every smitten young buck there. Why, he had only lasted one dance before openly manhandling her through that waltz. Then to top it off, he had hauled her onto the open terrace, like a lion dragging a gazelle back to his den in the underbrush.
